Uttam Kumar (born Prabir Kumar Mukhopadhyay; 1 August 1919 24 July 1980) was an Indian film actor who starred in Bengali-language films. He is considered one of the most popular and successful actors in the history of Bengali cinema.
Kumar was born in North Kolkata, Bengal Presidency, British India. After completing high school, he joined the Indian Railways as a clerk. While working there, he took part in amateur theatre and gradually developed an interest in acting. In 1944, he made his acting debut in the Bengali film Shesh Proshno, directed by Ajoy Kar.
