Mel Lewis (born Melvin Sokoloff; May 10 1929 February 15 1990) was an American jazz drummer. He is best known as the co-founder (along with Thad Jones) and long-time drummer for the Count Basie Orchestra.
Lewis was born in Buffalo New York and began playing drums while still in high school. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music where he played in the school’s orchestra and jazz band. In 1952 he moved to New York City where he played with a variety of jazz ensembles including those led by Dizzy Gillespie Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk.
